THE first private investment on Wodonga’s former railway land will open on Tuesday.
Renowned local restaurateurs Jodie Jones and Steve Carne will open Broadgauge restaurant at Junction Place and offer contemporary casual dining.
The husband and wife team were behind The Kitchen at the Courthouse Hotel at Howlong, a contemporary bistro listed in The Age Good Food Guide.
Ms Jones (chef) and Mr Carne (front of house) previously operated Albury restaurant, Source Dining, which attracted many accolades including Restaurant and Catering’s restaurant of the year and one Chef’s hat.
Places Victoria chief executive Peter Seamer said the restaurant was the outcome of an expression of interest process that started in August.
“The addition of a new restaurant to the Wodonga dining scene will be great for the area and an integral part of the revitalisation of central Wodonga,” he said.
“The opening of the Broadgauge restaurant will mark the end of careful restoration work by Southern Cross Developers on the historic station building to prepare it for its new use as a quality restaurant experience for locals and visitors.
“It’s very rewarding for Places Victoria to hand this historic space over to Jodie and Steve for its new use.”
Ms Jones and Mr Carne said they were excited to use the station building as a part of the revitalisation of central Wodonga and had named the restaurant Broadgauge in recognition of Wodonga’s rich rail history.
“Broadgauge will showcase the fantastic local produce and suppliers that we have access to,” Ms Jones said.
“We look forward to creating a memorable dining experience in this historic building that has been such an important piece of Wodonga for more than 140 years.”
Building and fit-out works in the station building have included the installation of a full commercial kitchen, internal seating for at least 60 people, with the external north-facing platform available for seasonal use.
Broadgauge will offer dinner Tuesday to Saturday and lunch on Friday and Saturday.
They will also cater for private dining including business lunches.
