Beechworth Primary School Upgrade

Southern Cross Developers was engaged to deliver the $6.5 million upgrade of Beechworth Primary School, carefully restoring one of the region's most significant heritage education buildings while providing modern facilities to support today's students and staff. Originally constructed in 1875, the project required a thoughtful approach that balanced heritage preservation with the functional needs of a contemporary learning environment.

The refurbishment involved the removal of unsympathetic additions that had accumulated over several decades, allowing the original character of the building to be reinstated. Extensive care was taken to remain sympathetic to the school's historic architecture, including sourcing heritage slate roof tiles, traditional mouldings and other period-appropriate materials to preserve the building's unique identity.

In addition to the restoration works, the project delivered new playing courts, upgraded toilet facilities, a new canteen and an extension incorporating a principal's office and modern staff amenities. A new reverse cycle air conditioning system was also installed throughout the school, improving comfort for students and teachers year-round. Completed in February 2024, the project showcases Southern Cross Developers' expertise in delivering complex heritage refurbishments while creating modern educational facilities that will serve the Beechworth community for generations to come.
